South Wingfield is a Derbyshire village situated 2 miles west of Alfreton. The village is steeped with history, so much so that the South Wingfield historical society meet on a regular basis in South Wingfield Cricket Club just down the road from the Old Yew Tree.

The Old Yew Tree Inn is nestled in the heart of the village opposite a cottage where the Pentrich Revolution was plotted and a restored mill is located nearby.

South Wingfeld is a beautiful village dating back to pre Norman times when it was known as Winefield. The village is famous for Wingfield Manor, an imposing structure which can be seen from many different approaches and where Mary Queen of Scots was incarcerated twice. The first Norman lord of the manor was Robert de Heriz whose family later built the first church here, called Linbery chapel, in the 12th century.

Although now a ruin, the manor house is now owned by English Heritage and open to the public at certain times of the year. Visitors can enjoy walking through the late Gothic Great Hall, exploring the superb vaulted undercroft, and enjoying the spectacular views. Wingfield Manor has also been used as the set for scenes from the popular television drama Peak Practice and Zefferelli's Jane Eyre.
